Pushing back on the Pandemic/Summer Slide

Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace.

– Confucius

The evidence is clear: the educational pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic nearly doubles the learning loss or retention, commonly known as the “summer slide.” It has been quite a journey for educators to adjust to the current state of education, and CurtisE Learning has kept pace with the changes needed to succeed in the virtual landscape. Summer is upon us, and we are meeting the needs of students seeking to counteract learning gaps and situate themselves for next year’s challenges. We don’t advocate for extending the school year, but keeping the learning engine Engaged is essential, especially for summer learning in 2020.

Whether it is subject tutoring, writing across all subjects, languages, or admissions test preparation, our methods are effectively keeping students on course, often advancing their skills and content knowledge, so they are 100% prepared for the fall. Our popular individualized test prep tutoring not only explores the challenges of a particular exam, but works with students to connect strategies to the demands of critical thinking and analysis, writing, and problem-solving not just in math but in approaching all tasks academic and beyond. We have also designed summer reading courses (we’ve taught them all!) that are both book club and writing improvement seminars that inspire students to be genuinely Engaged with the texts and produce Engaging responses teeming with sharp analysis. And...they’re darn fun!

Interestingly, we are finding that online students, most notably ones with learning challenges, are focused and succeeding. We adjust our pedagogy for each student to ensure a vibrant and enjoyable online learning environment. Coupled with the enthusiasm and energy of our instructors, our students look forward to sessions at the CurtisE “mental gym.” Each client is developing a robust love of learning, truly Engaged and Engaging, and ready for whatever may come their way.

Our popular test preparation and subject tutoring sessions are enrolling now. Please inquire at info@curtiselearning.com or submit inquiries here. And be sure to follow us as part of our learning community, tracking insights and the latest developments in education. We love to hear from you in the Boston area and the world over!

Curtis is a firm believer that every student can learn, and works to each student’s strengths while developing areas that need improvement. A literature analysis and writing stickler, he works hard to improve skills and ensure college readiness. Curtis' energy and sense of humor make his sessions popular- he portrays academics in a fun light, akin to what he calls the "mental and spiritual gym" where one learns how to learn while maintaining a relaxed and enjoyable environment. When not working in education, Curtis continues to pursue acting and is currently penning two screenplays. He loves tennis, guitar, cooking, travel, and, most of all, making his wife and kids giggle.
