Students master subject material and essential strategies that make our student ACT scores the envy of the industry. Score improvements are guaranteed as our approach is customized for each student to attain their goals, delivering or surpassing their target score.

ACT PREP

Our ACT tutors collaborate with students to master strategies and concepts necessary for success in the math, English, reading, writing, and science skills the ACT assesses. Students use test-taking techniques proven to improve scores by reducing common errors and consistently picking correct answers. Strategies for the optional essay provide a reliable method for submitting high-scoring responses (and excellent skills to apply to all other writing). Our holistic approach also includes an individualized timing game plan through our unique CurtisE Timing Engine™, ensuring test takers start and finish strong—it’s all in the timing, especially on the ACT!

Boosting Academic and Professional Skills

CurtisE ACT Prep enhances success not just with the exam but also academic and professional skills.

Succeeding on the ACT is not simply a “brute force” exercise, hammering away at practice tests and learning the exam’s intentional tricks, but requires understanding the tested concepts and skills. CurtisE Learning addresses any skill or knowledge needs while strengthening test-taking strength. Whether detecting and fixing comma splices, tackling a piece by Virginia Woolf, or tackling systems of equations, our tutors ensure your student masters the fundamentals that will increase not only ACT scores but school grades and academic confidence as well. Our students keep their eyes on the ball-  ACT scores can count for 25% to 35% of a college admissions decision, but GPA accounts for at least 50%.

ACT Tricks and Pitfalls

Clocking in at THREE HOURS or more, the ACT is likely the longest exam anyone will take. An essential part of our program is alleviating anxiety to maintain focus and “control” the test. Students learn not to get tempted by wrong answers and keep pace with the allotted time. ACT asks reading-based questions in a non-chronological way and often tests a wider variety of math concepts, so analyzing the ACT “playbook” is essential. CurtisE student scores are exceptional as students learn subject material and critical strategies that ensure they have the advantage.

When to Start ACT Prep

Most students target taking the ACT in the spring of junior year, although there are other dates to retake it before college applications are due. Many students begin ACT Prep during sophomore year, while students start preparing a year or more before their target exam date. Our goal is to have the student consistently performing at the desired level within a month before “the one that counts” test date. Depending on school application goals, and practice test/PreACT data, it’s advisable to backward plan from your score objective.

Generally, starting prep during the summer before junior year is recommended. However, some students should consider starting earlier if they:

  • want to get a jumpstart (particularly in mastering all ACT math concepts)

  • struggle with testing (our techniques apply to all standardized tests)

  • are heavily scheduled during the summer.

About the ACT

The ACT stands for American College Testing and is accepted for college admissions as an alternative to the SAT. The test covers English, math, reading, science, and writing (Optional Essay). This test is somewhat different from the SAT, particularly in the average time per question, and test-taking techniques are exponentially more critical to success.

Introduced in 1959 by University of Iowa education professor E.F. Lindquist, the ACT is more concerned with directly measuring a student’s grasp of the subject matter taught in high school versus predicting academic success at the university level.

The ACT  is owned and governed by ACT, Inc., a not-for-profit organization.
